Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Shepherd University (13-7) split softball doubleheader action with West Chester (15-8) at West Chester on Tuesday. The Golden Rams gained a 5-0 win in game one, while the Rams recorded a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap behind a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).
West Chester answered back in the second when Annamarie Hartman walked with the bases loaded to plate pinch-runner Sarah Byham.
Shepherd added a pair of runs in the fourth as junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) and freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) each drove in a run.
Shepherd took a 5-1 lead in the fifth as senior pitcher/designated player Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) walked with the bases loaded to score junior pinch-runner Ariana Ramirez (Gainesville, Va./Patriot).
The Rams added two runs in the sixth behind an RBI-single from junior catcher/third baseman Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) and an RBI-double off the bat of senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).
West Chester added two runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double by Cat Hammer.
Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-5 with a run scored to pace the Rams. Brown and Baker each added a pair of hits.
Alyssa Herion and Hammer had two hits apiece for the Golden Rams.
Junior pitcher/designated player Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (6-3) gained the win in relief for the Rams. Maegen Kavanagh (0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (2-5) took the loss for the Golden Rams.
West Chester scored five runs on six hits and an error in the fifth inning to gain the win in game one. Heidi McCollester smacked a two-run double to key the rally.
Sturgill went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Sophomore Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (4.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams. Amanda Houck (7.0 IP, 4 H, 8 K, 1 BB) (9-3) gained the win for the Golden Rams.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to West Liberty for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
