Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-8, 9-1 MEC) had 30 hits on the day en route to a sweep of Concord (13-9, 7-2 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Anderson Field on Friday. The Rams gained a 13-2 win in game one and added an 18-9 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Sophomore catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) belted a two-run double and later scored on a single by junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).

The Rams added a pair of runs in the second on a two-run single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run),

Shepherd increased its lead to 11-0 with four runs in the third as Doyle had a two-run double, while sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) each contributed RBI-singles.

The Rams added two runs in the fourth on a two-run blast by senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

The Mountain Lions got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Paul Williams doubled and later scored on a double by Adam Linkous.

Concord added a run in the sixth as Jordan Clark singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Atkinson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Doyle added a 3-for-5 outing with four RBI to pace the Rams.

Linkous went 2-for-3 for the Mountain Lions.

Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (6-1) earned the win for the Rams. Will Guay (2-2) (2.1 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

Trailing 9-8 in the nightcap, Shepherd rallied with eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 16-9 advantage. Hamel hit a two-run single and Hoffman added three-run double to key the scoring output.

The Rams added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh as Hoffman and by junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) each scored on wild pitches.

Hamel went 2-for-4 with a solo blast, while Hoffman went 2-for-5 for the Rams. Doyle added a three-run homer in the second.

Trevor Wiersma hit a three-run homer, Chad Frazier added a two-run blast, while Clark went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to pace the Mountain Lions.

Sophomore reliever Mitchell Johnson (Shady Side, Md./Southern) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (2-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Cody Dooley (1.0 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (2-2) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
