Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Shepherd University (14-10, 9-3 MEC) dropped a pair of games to UVa-Wise (10-15, 7-5 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at UVa-Wise on Saturday. The Cavaliers gained a 3-1 win in game one and added a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one as Brock Smith doubled and later scored on a single by Brett Yates.
UVa-Wise added two runs in the fourth. Smith doubled and Jordon Turner followed with a walk. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Haga and Turner later scored on a wild pitch.
Shepherd got a run in the fifth on a solo blast by senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
Junior starter Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (5.2 IP, 8 H,3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (0-4) took the loss. Wise starterGreg Duncan (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (3-2) gained the complete game win.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on an RBI-double by Smith.
Wise added four runs in the second with a two-run homer by Tyler Blaum keying the rally.
Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the fifth. Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) singled and scored on a groundout by junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU). Junior second baseman Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) singled and later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run),
Wise added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single from Smith.
Smith went 3-for-3 to lead the Cavaliers.
Sophomore pitcher Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (2-2) took the loss. RJ Vanvickle (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (2-3) gained the win for Wise.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Seton Hill for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
