Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-8, 6-4 MEC) split doubleheader softball action with Wheeling Jesuit (10-15, 6-4 MEC) at West Liberty on Saturday. The Cardinals gained a 5-0 win in game one, while the Rams recorded a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and later scored when freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) reached on a fielder's choice.
Wheeling Jesuit tied the game in the second on an RBI-single by Jackie Cramer.
The Rams added two runs in the third. Brown led off with a double and scored on a single by junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland). Sturgill later scored on a single by senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).
Shepherd added a run in the fourth as junior designated player Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) singled and scored on a single by Sturgill.
The Rams completed the scoring with a run in the fifth. Junior pinch-hitter Keslie Weaver (York, Pa./West York) walked and was replaced by junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee). Gilligan later scored on an infield single by Shearer.
Sturgill went 3-for-4, while Konopka and Shearer each added a pair of hits.
Cramer went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (7-3) gained the win for the Rams. Mallory Chapman (7.0 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 6 K, 4 BB) (9-8) took the loss for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a three-run homer by Chapman.
Wheeling Jesuit added single runs in the third and sixth.
Cassie Holstein went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals.
Konopka and senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) each had singles for the Rams.
Senior starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (3-4) took the loss for the Rams. Chapman (7.0 IP, 2 H, 8 K, 5 BB) (9-7) gained the win for the Cardinals.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Bloomsburg for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
