Shepherd Softball Drops Pair to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (3-3) dropped a pair of games in softball action at Millersville on Sunday. Millersville (2-0) gained a 12-10 win in game one and rallied for a 12-11 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Senior designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) hit a two-run single to key the rally.

The Rams added a run in the third on an RBI-single by senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).

The Marauders got a grand slam from Rebecca Blatt in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 5-4.

Staley added an RBI-single in the fourth to up the lead to 6-4 before Millersville tied the game in the bottom of the inning behind a solo blast from Macy Koontz and a sacrifice fly from Blatt.

Shepherd added two runs in the sixth on a solo homer by Robinson and an RBI-double by freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).

Millersville plated six runs on three hits and a pair of Shepherd errors in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for the win. A two-run triple by Faith Willenbrock keyed the rally.

Shepherd added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-single by Robinson.

Robinson went 4-for-4 to lead the Rams. Staley, Brown, and sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each added a pair of hits.

Reanne Buskey 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for the Marauders.

Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (3.0 IP, 5 H 7 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams. Emma Bevard (5.0 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Marauders.

After Millersville scored five runs in the first in the nightcap, Shepherd erupted with 11 runs in the third as Brown and Taylor each smacked two-run doubles, while Robinson had a two-run single.

Millersville rallied with three runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game at 11-11.

The Marauders gained the win in the seventh as Allie Janowiak reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.

Junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) and Konopka each had three hits for the Rams.

Willenbrock went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead Millersville.

Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (2.2 IP,  3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams.  Bevard (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) (2-0) picked up the win in relief.

The Rams return on Friday when they travel to the Salem Tournament to face East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. and Indiana (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
