SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (4-6) handed Queens College (1-5) a 4-1 setback in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday afternoon.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a throwing error.

Shepherd added a run in the third as sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) doubled and scored on a single of the bat of junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU).

The Rams took a 3-0 advantage in the fourth when sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a double by junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar).

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the seventh on a solo homer by Sam Siegel.

Shepherd added a run in the eighth. Hoffman led off with a single and was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner Riley Lazich (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring/Radford). Lazich scored when Doyle walked with the bases loaded.

Andrew Navarez and Louis Antos each had a pair of hits for the Knights.

Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (3-1) gained the win for the Rams. Sophomore reliever Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (2.0 IP, 1 H,  0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) gained the save. Dennis Buckstein (0-2) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) took the loss for Queens.

The two teams return to action on Saturday at Fairfax Field for a noon doubleheader.
