Shippensburg Edges Shepherd Baseball

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg (12-16) rallied past Shepherd University (17-12) in 10 innings for a 12-11 victory in baseball action at Fairchild Field on Tuesday.  

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run blast by junior outfielder/pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).

The Rams upped their lead to 7-0 with five runs in the second. Sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) had a two-run double, while junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU), sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), and senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) each added RBI-singles.

After Shippensburg scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, Doyle hit a two-run blast to give Shepherd a 9-2 lead.The Raiders added single runs in the third and fourth before Shepherd added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Hamel.

Sophomore Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) hit a two-run double in the sixth before Shippensburg answered with solo blasts by Nick Spangler and Dalton Hoiles in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 11-6.

Tommy Baggett hit a two-run homer for the Raiders in the seventh to cut the lead to 11-8.

Shippensburg added two runs in the eighth as Cash Gladfelter drove in a run and scored another.

The Raiders tied the game in the ninth as Grant Hoover scored on back-to-back wild pitches before Baggett singled home Drew Bene with the game-winner in the 10th.

Atkinson went 4-for-6 and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) went 3-for-6 to lead an 18-hit attack for the Rams.

Jack Goertzen went 4-for-5 to pace an 18-hit effort for the Raiders.

Smith (1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (4-2) took the loss for the Rams. Zack Sims (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (5-3) picked up the win for the Raiders.

The Rams are slated to return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. game.
