Box Score 2 SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (20-10) split doubleheader softball action with Shippensburg (16-10) at Shippensburg on Wednesday. The Rams rallied for an 8-7 win in game one, while Shippensburg earned a 1-0 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on an RBI-single by junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).
Shippensburg took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single by Michaela Ghanayem.
The Raiders upped their advantage to 6-2 with four runs in the second. Courtney Coy hit a two-run single to key the rally.
Shippensburg added a run in the third on an RBI-single by Tara Bicko.
Shepherd scored five runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-6. Junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) had a two-run double, junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) and senior pitcher/designated player Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) added RBI-doubles, while Taylor had an RBI-single.
The Rams rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth to gain the win. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and moved to third on a single by Cox. Konopka scored on a bunt single by Taylor and Cox scored the game-winner on a bunt single by
freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).
Taylor went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to pace the Rams.
Bicko went 2-for-4 for the Raiders.
Junior reliever Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (9-4) earned the win for the Rams. Taryn Wilson (3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (12-6) took the loss for the Raiders.
Bicko had Shippensburg's lone hit in the nightcap as she doubled in the fourth and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Collins.
Cox and sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) each singled for the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (2-2) took the loss. Wilson (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 3 BB) (13-6) gained the win for the Raiders.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Liberty for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
