Shepherd Softball Splits with West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-11, 12-6 MEC) split doubleheader softball action with West Liberty (12-16, 6-12 MEC) at West Liberty on Thursday. The Hilltoppers posted a 2-1 win in 11 innings in game one, while the Rams recorded a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning in the nightcap. Junior outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) singled and later scored when junior designated player/catcher Keslie Weaver (York, Pa./West York) reached on a fielder's choice. Weaver later scored when freshman pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) reached on an error.

The Rams added a run in the fifth as freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) doubled, moved to third on an error, and later scored when sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was thrown out attempting to steal second base.

The Hilltoppers plated a run in the seventh to avoid the shutout. Pinch-hitter Kate Meloun was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a single by Skylar Fankhauser.

Van Pelt (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K 1 BB) (5-0) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Taylor Wright (0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K 0 BB) (1-5) took the loss.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one as Kelly Mullins walked and later scored on an error.

Shepherd tied the game in the fifth as junior outfielder Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) singled and scored on a single off the bat of junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax).

West Liberty rallied for the win with a run in the 11th. Pinch-runner Skylar Minzler scored the game-winner on a single by Kelsi Johnson.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (6.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 12 K, 1 BB) (2-3) took the loss. Makenzie Amend (11.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 4 BB) (8-4) gained the win for the Hilltoppers.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host UVa-Wise for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
