SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (23-11, 14-6 MEC) swept UVa-Wise (22-14, 11-9 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Friday. The Rams posted a 2-1 in game one and added a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning in game one. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and later scored on a single by freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).

After UVa-Wise tied the score in the seventh, Shepherd scored the game-winner in the bottom of the frame.Senior outfielder Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) walked and scored on a double off the bat of Konopka.

Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (10-4) earned the win for the Rams. Taylor Brandts (6.2 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (12-6) took the loss for the Raiders.

Brown went 3-for 3 and scored a pair of runs in the nightcap. Junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) added a 2-for-3 effort and drove in two runs.

Senior starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB) (6-4) gained the win for the Rams. Brandts (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 UER, 3 K, 0 BB) (12-7) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Concord for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
