Shepherd Baseball Reaches 20-Win Mark; Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-12, 16-6 MEC) swept Wheeling Jesuit (4-24, 3-17 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained an 11-4 win in game one and added a 10-2 win in the nightcap.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 4-0 lead in the third inning in game one. Dom Davis hit a two-run single to key the rally.

Shepherd rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) had a two-run single and sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added an RBI-single.

Shepherd added four runs in the fourth. Sophomore designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) hit a solo blast, while Doyle and Hamel each drove in a run.

The Rams added four runs in the sixth as Hamel hit a two-run blast, while junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) each added solo round-trippers.

Doyle went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Hamel was 2-for-3 and drove in five runs.

Sophomore reliever Mitchell Johnson (Shady Side, Md./Southern) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (3-1) picked up the win for the Rams. Evans (4.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-4) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Trailing 2-0 in the nightcap, Shepherd plated five runs in the fifth. Doyle hit a three-run homer to key the rally.

The Rams added five more runs in the sixth with a three-run homer by Smith highlighting the scoring outburst.

Smith went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Rams.

Senior Logan Menz (Frederick, Md./Frederick/Salisbury) (5.0 IP, 2 R,1 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (1-0) gained the win. Junior Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (2.0 IP,1 H,  5 K, 1 BB)  picked up the save. Nick Luciano (5.0 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Cardinals.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
