Shepherd Softball Sweeps Concord

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-11, 16-6 MEC) swept Concord (12-20, 9-13 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams posted a 3-0 win in game one and added an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled and scored on a triple by junior designated player Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).

The Rams added two runs in the fourth on a two-run double by junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

Konopka went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.

Senior starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 7 K, 0 BB) (7-4) gained the win for the Rams. Rachel Pritchard (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (3-11) took the loss.

Concord took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. A Stokes hit a two-run double to key the rally.

Shepherd tied the game at 4-4 all in the second. Junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) smacked a two-run single to highlight the scoring.

The Rams took an 8-4 lead in the third on a two-run single by senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and a two-run double by Konopka.

An RBI-single by senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) gave the Rams a 9-4 advantage in the fourth before Taylor and Brown had RBI-singles in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Taylor went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 K, 4 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Rams in relief. Pritchard (0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (3-12) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Lock Haven for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.

Notes: The softball field was officially named Sara Cree Field at a ceremony in between games. A Sara Cree Field sign has been added to the scoreboard.
