Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (22-12) used a 15-hit attack en route to a 13-3 win over Virginia State (21-14-1) in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday. The victory gave Shepherd head coach Matt McCarty his 200th career win.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
The Rams added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) and three more in the third on a three-run blast off the bat of senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
Shepherd added four runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had a two-run double to key the rally.
The Rams added three runs in the seventh with a two-run single by sophomore catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) highlighting the rally.
The Trojans scored three runs in the ninth with a two-run single by Joshua Heigh keying the rally.
Junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) went 3-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Sisco Scott went 2-for-3 for the Trojans.
Sophomore pitcher Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K, 2 BB) (4-2) earned the win. Jarren Norman (3.1 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 9 E, 0 K, 0 BB) (4-3) took the loss for Virginia State.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
