Box Score 2 FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University (27-13, 17-7 MEC) split with Fairmont State (19-19, 15-9 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Fairmont State on Wednesday. Shepherd gained a 2-0 win in game one, while Fairmont State earned a 1-0 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) doubled and scored when senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) belted a two-run blast to center.
Freshman shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Andie Baughman went 2-for-3 to lead Fairmont State.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 3 H, 6 K, 2 BB) (11-5) earned the complete game shutout win for the Rams. Rachel Bias (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (7-9) took the loss for the Fighting Falcons.
The Fighting Falcons scored the game's only run in the fifth in the nightcap. Abby Burgess reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Kaylee Andersen. Andersen scored on a double by Baughman.
Baughman and Courtney Worcester each went 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
Sturgill went 2-for-3 for the Rams.
Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (7-5) took the loss for the Rams. Hannah Clunk (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 K, 2 BB) (4-2) got the win for the Falcons.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a noon doubleheader.
