Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – Paige Orbell and Hayley Holmquist each scored three goals to lead Wheeling Jesuit (3-9, 2-1 MEC) to a 9-8 win over Shepherd (5-5, 1-1 MEC) to a in MEC women's lacrosse action at Wheeling Jesuit on Friday.
Sophomore attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) led the Rams with three goals and an assist for a match-high four points. Sophomore midfielder Elishia Davis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) tallied a pair of goals, while freshman attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) added a goal and two assists.
Senior midfielder Sarah Wendt (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) added a goal and an assist and freshman attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) netted a goal.
Ally Coggins had a goal and an assist for Wheeling Jesuit.
Shepherd had a 5-4 lead at halftime.
The Cardinals scored the first three goals of the second half to take an 8-5 lead after a goal by Taylor Booth with 13:01 left. Shepherd answered back with back-to-back goals by Davis and Funke to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Holmquist had an unassisted goal with 1:35 left before Kelly scored for the Rams with 1:01 left. Shepherd won the final draw, but later suffered a turnover.
Shepherd had a 36-35 edge in shots and a 10-9 advantage in draw controls. The Cardinals had a 29-20 advantage in ground balls. Shepherd was 24-of-28 in clears, while Wheeling Jesuit was 26-of-30.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Hickman (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded a career-high 19 saves for the Rams, while Elizabeth Hanks recorded 17 saves for the Cardinals. Hickman's 19 saves established a Shepherd single game record, eclipsing the old mark of 18 shared by Hickman (vs. Franklin Pierce, 3-13-17), Savannah Shores (vs. Mercyhurst, 3-9-16 and East Stroudsburg, 3-2-16), and Emily Melanson (vs. Stonehill, 3-31-11).
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Notre Dame College. First draw is slated for noon.
