Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (28-14, 18-8 MEC) split with Wheeling Jesuit (21-20, 17-9) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. Wheeling Jesuit gained a 6-1 win in game one, while the Rams earned the split with a 5-4 win in nine innings in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled and later scored on a single off the bat of senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).
Wheeling Jesuit tied the game in the third as Alaina York singled and later scored on an error.
Shepherd rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Junior designated player Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) and junior third baseman Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) each had RBI-singles to highlight the rally.
The Rams took a 4-1 lead with a run in the sixth behind an RBI-single by senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion).
The Cardinals plated three runs in the seventh on a three-run double by Brianna Grimes to tie the game.
Munda led off the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax). Munda moved to third on a single by junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and scored the game-winner when she slid home under the tag after Brown grounded out.
Konopka, Sturgill, Staley, and Munda each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
York went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals.
Munda (9.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (8-5) gained the win for the Rams. Mallory Chapman (3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB) (14-12) took the loss for the Cardinals.
Wheeling Jesuit took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one. York tripled and later scored on a single by Cassie Holstein.
Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Cox led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Cardinals took a 5-1 lead in the fourth with a two-run single by York keying the rally.
Wheeling Jesuit added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Jackie Cramer.
Holstein and York each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals.
Sturgill (3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (11-6) took the loss for the Rams. Chapman (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 7 BB) gained the win for the Cardinals.\
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Notre Dame College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
