Shepherd Softball Splits with West Liberty

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (29-15, 19-9 MEC) split with West Liberty (17-21, 11-17 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Sunday. West Liberty earned a 1-0 win in game one, while Shepherd gained a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) walked and scored on a double by senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie). Junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) walked and junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) followed with a single that was misplayed as Robinson and Cox scored, while Konopka advanced to third.  Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) followed with a single to plate Konopka.

West Liberty scored its only run in the seventh. Katie Higginbotham singled and later scored when Kaitlyn Stress reached on an error.

Brown went 2-for-2 to pace the Rams.

Junior pitcher/outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (12-6) gained the win. Taylor Wright (3.1 IP, 5 H, 2ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (1-6) took the loss.

West Liberty scored the game's only run in the third inning in game one. Katie Beeman led off with a double and later scored when Kelsi Johnson grounded out.

Johnson led the Hilltoppers with a 2-for-3 effort.

Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion). (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (8-6) took the loss for the Rams. Makenzie Amend (7.0 IP, 3 H, 11 K, 2 BB) (12-8) gained the shutout win for the Hilltoppers.The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Charleston for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
