Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (30-16, 20-10 MEC) split with Charleston (26-24, 11-19 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Charleston on Friday. Shepherd gained a 7-4 triumph in game one, while Charleston earned a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Karlie Pinkerton singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Haleigh Christopher.
Shepherd took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the fourth. Junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) hit a three-run double and later scored on a single by senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).
Charleston got a two-run double from Ansley Warner and an RBI-single from AJ Warner in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4.
Shepherd plated three runs in the seventh to gain the win. Junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) hit a two-run single and senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) added an RBI-single.
Freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams. Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) and Staley each added a pair of hits.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 K, 3 BB) (13-6) earned the win. Jessie Rowe (6.1 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (10-12) took the loss.
Charleston got the split with a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Danielle Norton singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Janie Schmidt. Schmidt later scored when Shelby Ume reached on a fielders' choice. Ume later scored on a single by Emily Dutton.
Staley singled with one out in the seventh for Shepherd's lone hit.
Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (8-7) took the loss. Carlee Lucas (7.0 IP, 1 H. 5 K, 3 BB) (14-10) gained the win for the Golden Eagles.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
