Shepherd Softball Sweeps West Virginia State; Rams Win MEC North

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (32-16, 22-10 MEC) swept West Virginia State (30-20, 18-14 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at West Virginia State on Saturday. The Rams gained a 2-1 win in game one and added a 5-0 victory in the nightcap. Shepherd finishes the regular season as the MEC North champions.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one as freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) reached on an error and later scored on a double off the bat of junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

The Rams added a run in the fourth as senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion)  led off with a single and later scored when junior outfielder Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) reached on an error.

West Virginia State scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double by Brittany Allison.

Munda went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams at the plate.

Munda (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (9-7) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Callie Norton (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (5-6) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

Shepherd plated three unearned runs on one hit and two Yellow Jacket errors in the second in the nightcap to take a 3-0 lead.

The Rams added a run in the fourth as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled and later scored on a single by senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).

Shepherd added another run in the fifth as Munda singled and later scored on an error.

Staley went 3-for-4 and Brown added a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (7.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 4 BB) (7-0) tossed a one-hitter for the Rams. Emily Moore (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (11-6) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

The Rams return to action on May 4-6 at the MEC Tournament in Salem, Virginia.
