Box Score 2 HUDSON, Ohio – Shepherd University (29-13, 23-5 MEC) swept Notre Dame College (17-28, 14-14 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Notre Dame on Sunday. The Rams earned a 6-1 win in game one and rallied for a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one. Naja Garcia reached on a walk and later scored on an error.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the fourth behind RBI-singles from junior designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
Shepherd added three runs in the fifth as junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) and McCourt each drove in runs.
Sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) led off with a double and later scored on an error in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) and Nottingham each went 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack for the Rams.
Lukas Thompson went 2-for-4 for the Falcons.
Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (7-2) picked up the win. Falcon starter Kenny Pierson (6.0 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (5-1) took the loss.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the second in the nightcap. Ricky Phillips reached on an error and later scored on an error.
The Falcons added three runs in the third with a two-run single by Drake May keying the rally.
Notre Dame tacked on a run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Leo Wells.
The Rams plated six runs in the fifth to rally for the win. Atkinson hit a three-run homer and McCourt added a two-run double to key the scoring outburst.
Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
May, Garcia, and Wells each had two hits for the Falcons.
Junior reliever Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (2-4) earned the win. Devon Robb (0.0 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Falcons.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 3 p.m. contest.
