Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – McKayla Grasham scored an unassisted goal with 1:04 left in the first overtime period to lift UVA-Wise (12-4, 5-0 MEC) to an 11-10 win over Shepherd (7-6, 3-2 MEC) in MEC women's lacrosse action on Senior Day at Ram Stadium on Sunday.
Senior midfielder Sarah Wendt (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) led the Rams with four goals, while freshman attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) added three goals and an assist. Wendt had a game-high nine draw controls to give her 64 for the season and broke the Shepherd single-season mark of 60 set by Nicole Ruane in 2012.
Sophomore attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) added a goal and an assist, while sophomore attackers Emily Brown (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and Jordan Sauro (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Shippensburg) each added single tallies. Funke added nine ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Her 10 caused turnovers set a Shepherd single-game mark surpassing the old record of nine set by Alyx Albano vs. Howard in 2012.
Freshman attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) notched an assist.
Kristin Gobbi had four goals and Jesse French added three for the Cavaliers.
Shepherd had a 6-4 lead at the break behind three first-half goals from Wendt.
The game featured seven ties and six lead changes.
Shepherd took its last lead of the game at 10-9 on an unassisted goal by Funke with 6:16 left in regulation.
Wise forced the extra session on a goal by Grasham with 1:30 left in regulation.
Shots were even at 37-all. Shepherd had a 13-10 advantage in draw controls and a 31-26 edge in ground balls. Shepherd was 27-of-30 in clears, while UVa-Wise was 26-of-32.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Hickman (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded 12 saves for the Rams, while Melanie Reilly posted 18 saves for the Cavaliers.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to UVa-Wise for semifinal action of the MEC Tournament.
