Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-11, 10-4 MEC) split with Urbana (6-22, 6-8 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. The Blue Knights gained a 2-0 win in 11 innings in game one, while the Rams earned the split with a 12-5 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap. Sophomore designated hitter Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) each hit two-run home runs to key the rally.
After Urbana plated two runs in the top of the fourth, Hamel delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the frame to give the Rams an 8-2 lead.
Nottingham added a two-run round-tripper and sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) contributed a two-run double in the fifth to up the Shepherd lead to 12-2.
Urbana rallied with three runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Nottingham, Doyle, and Hamel each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Zeth Tanner went 3-for-3 for Urbana.
Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (4-1) gained the win for the Rams. Steven Beall (4.0 IP, 7 H, 10 R, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Blue Knights.
The Blue Knights won game one on a two-run homer by Tanner in the 11th inning.
Sophomore reliever Mitchell Johnson (Shady Side, Md./Southern) (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-1) took the loss for the Rams. Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (10.0 IP, 4 H, 14 K, 3 BB) established a Shepherd single-game mark for most strikeouts in a game with 14. Robbie Guerrero (2-3) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 53 K, 2 BB) earned the win for the Blue Knights.
The two teams return to action on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
