Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (16-8, 8-4 MEC) swept doubleheader softball action with Fairmont State (12-14, 8-4 MEC) at Shepherd on Thursday. The Rams gained a 2-0 win in game one and rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in game one in the second inning as junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) singled and later scored when junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on a fielder's choice.
The Rams added a run in the fifth. Junior designated player Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) led off with a double and junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) followed with a triple.
Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 9 K, 2 BB) (8-3) gained the win for the Rams. Rachel Bias (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 2 BB) (5-6) took the loss for the Fighting Falcons.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on an RBI-single by Sturgill.
After the Falcons scored a run in the second, Shepherd added two runs behind RBI-singles by Shearer and Konopka.
A three-run homer by Andie Baughman in the seventh gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
Shepherd got a two-out, two-run single by senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.
Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Rams in relief. Fairmont State reliever Darby Peterson (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
