Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (17-11, 12-4 MEC) swept Urbana (6-24, 6-10 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams gained a 17-4 win in game one and added a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) doubled and scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run). Doyle scored on a two-run blast by sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy). Junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) followed with a single and scored on a double by sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
After Urbana scored two runs in the second, Shepherd plated eight runs on six hits and an error. Doyle hit a three-run homer and Nottingham added a two-run double to key the scoring outburst.
The Blue Knights added a run in the fourth on a solo homer by Zeth Tanner.
Shepherd added five runs in the sixth on two-run homers by sophomore Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Doyle and a solo blast off the bat of freshman pinch-hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic).
Doyle went 4-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored to pace the Rams.
Mickey Barea went 3-for-4 and Tanner added a 2-for-3 effort for the Blue Knights.
Freshman pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (2-2) gained the victory for the Rams. Urbana starter Tyler Bess (2.2 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 5 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (2-4) took the loss.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a three-run blast by senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
Urbana cut the lead to 3-1 on an RBI-single by Daniel Quiroz in the second.
Shepherd added three runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. McCourt walked with the bases loaded, junior outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and another run scored on an error.
Urbana added a run in the fifth as Brad Burkholder singled and later scored on an error.
The Rams tacked on three runs in the sixth. McCourt hit a solo homer, while Entsminger walked and scored on a passed ball, and Atkinson walked and was plated on a single by Doyle.
Hoffman went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Junior starter Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (1-4) gained the win. Urbana starter Patrick Orr (7.0 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 3 p.m. game.
