Shepherd Softball Splits with Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University (17-9, 9-5 MEC) split doubleheader softball action with Urbana (6-26, 4-12 MEC) at Urbana on Saturday. The Blue Knights gained a 6-5 win in game one, while Shepherd posted a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap as when freshman second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled and later scored on an error.

Urbana scored three runs in the third with a two-run single by Mykee Holtz keying the rally.

Shepherd added a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Rams scored three runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead with a two-run double by junior pinch-hitter Alexis Shearer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area/Hagerstown CC) keying the rally.

Urbana added a run in the seventh as the Rams held on for the win.

Senior starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 4  ER, 3 K, 5 BB) (4-4) gained the win for the Rams. Carly Allen took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in game one in the first inning as junior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) singled and later scored on a groundout by senior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).

Urbana took a 2-1 led in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Holtz.

Shepherd retook the lead in the second behind a two-run single by junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

Urbana plated four runs in the sixth as four straight batters walked with the bases loaded to give the Blue Knights a 6-3 lead.

Shepherd's rally in the seventh fell short as they plated a pair of runs.

Cox led the Rams with a 3-for-4 effort.

Junior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (8-4) took the loss for the Rams. Kayleigh Pate (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 2 BB) (3-6) gained the win for the Blue Knights.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
