Shepherd Softball Sweeps Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Shepherd University (19-9, 11-5 MEC) swept doubleheader softball action with Notre Dame College (10-21, 4-13 MEC) at Notre Dame on Sunday. The Rams gained a 4-3 win in game one and added a 2-1 victory in nine innings in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and an RBI-single sophomore pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham).

Notre Dame answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-double by Shelby Stephens.

Ariel Linberger hit a two-run single for the Falcons in the fourth to tie the game at 3-all.

Shepherd scored the game-winner in the fifth. Junior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a double by Baker.

Baker and Taylor each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Stocks (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB) (2-1) gained the win. McKenzie Zigmont (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 5 BB) (4-5) took the loss for the Falcons.

Shepherd scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 2-0 lead. Senior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) hit a two-out single and junior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) followed with a single.  Senior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) smacked a two-run double to plate Robinson and Gilligan.

Notre Dame rallied with a run in the bottom of the frame. Kathryn Smith led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Laina Combs. Combs later scored on an infield single by Amy Hoover. Munda got Stephens to line out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams.

Munda (9.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) (5-4) gained the win for the Rams. Taylor Olson (9.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (6-10) took the loss for the Falcons.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
