Shepherd Baseball Reaches 30-Win Mark with Triumph over Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (30-13) used a 16-hit attack en route to a 20-4 win over Shippensburg (22-22) in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday.

Shippensburg took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run homer by Austin Bulman.

Shepherd plated eight runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) hit a three-run homer and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) added two-run single to key the rally.

The Rams added five runs in the third with a grand slam by junior designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and a solo blast by sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) highlighting the scoring outburst.

Shepherd added a pair of runs in the fourth behind RBI-singles from junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) and Nottingham.

The Raiders plated a run in the fifth as Logan Williamson walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Scout Knotts.

The Rams took a 16-4 lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Doyle.

Shepherd completed the scoring with four runs in the sixth. Senior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) smacked an RBI-triple and sophomore second baseman Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot) added a three-run homer.

Doyle went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI to pace the Rams. McCourt added a 1-for-2 effort with five RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Wes Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill/UMES) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (5-2) earned the win. Noah Inch (1.1 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Raiders.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
