Box Score BECKLEY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (36-13) had 16 hits on the day en route to a 14-5 win over Concord (26-23) at the MEC Baseball Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Friday.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo blast by sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run). Doyle's home run gave him 87 hits for the season as he set a Shepherd single-season mark, eclipsing the old mark of 86 set by Collin Brown in 2006.
The Rams added 11 runs on eight hits in the third. Sophomore shortstop Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot) hit a three-run double, Doyle smacked a three-run homer, and junior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) added a two-run double to key the scoring outburst.
Concord got on the board with three runs in the fourth. Trevor Wiersma had an RBI-double and Jordan Clark added a two-run homer.
Shepherd added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).
Junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) hit a solo homer in the sixth to give the Rams a 14-3 lead.
The Mountain Lions added a run in the seventh on a solo homer by Clark and another in the ninth as Chad Frazier reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a groundout by Adam Linkous.
Doyle went 3-for-6 and drove in four runs, while Nottingham added a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI and a pair of runs scored to pace the Rams.
Clark led the Mountain Lions with a 2-for-4 effort with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Senior pitcher Logan Manz (Frederick, Md./Frederick /Salisbury) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (3-0) earned the winwith relief help from senior Nic Hammer (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB). Trent Abernathy (2.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 0 K,10 BB) (5-1) took the loss for Concord.
The Rams return to tournament action on Saturday against Charleston for a noon contest.
