Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Fairmont State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (32-13, 25-5 MEC) swept Fairmont State (23-24, 15-15 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action on Senior Day at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams gained a 6-3 win in game one and added a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) led off with a double and later scored when sophomore first baseman Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) grounded out. The Rams added another run as sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) reached on a single and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Falcons cut the lead to 2-1 in the second on a solo blast by Tyler Hill.

The Rams answered back in the bottom of the frame as senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) hit a solo homer to right center to up the lead to 3-1.

Fairmont State cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third behind an RBI-double by Austin Norman.

The Falcons plated a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Ben Myers to tie the game at 3-3.

Shepherd countered in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back solo blasts by Atkinson and Doyle to take a 5-3 advantage.

The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth as junior designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached on a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

Atkinson, Doyle, and Hoffman each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 12 K, 1 BB) (9-1) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Logan Smith (4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-5) took the loss for the Falcons.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on solo round-trippers from Atkinson andjunior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).

Fairmont State tied the game with a pair of runs in the second. Tyler HiIl hit a solo homer, while Tyler Skidmore walked and later scored on a single by Joe LaRocca.

Shepherd scored the game-winner in the sixth.  Hamel singled and advanced to second on an error. He advanced to third on a single by Smith and was replaced by senior pinch-runner Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar). Entsminger scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hoffman.

Smith went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Hill posted a 2-for-3 outing for the Falcons.

Senior pitcher Logan Manz (Frederick, Md./Frederick /Salisbury) (7.0 IP, 7 H,  2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (3-0)earned the win. Michael Stout (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (8-3) took the loss for Fairmont State.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
