Shepherd Women’s Lacrosse Falls to UVa-Wise in Triple Overtime in Championship Game

WISE, Va. – Hannah Marshall scored four goals, including the game-winner with 1:53 left in the third overtime period, to lead UVa-Wise (14-4) to a 12-11 win over Shepherd (8-7) in the championship game of the MEC Women's Lacrosse Tournament at UVa-Wise on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro)  led the Rams with four goals and an assist. Freshman attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) netted three goals, while sophomore midfielder Elishia Davis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) added two goals and an assist. Funke added five draw controls, four caused turnovers, and three ground balls.

Sophomore attacker Megan Dusci Walkersville, Md./Walkersville/Frederick CC) and senior midfielder Sarah Wendt (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) each added goals. Wendt also recorded a game-high six ground balls. Sophomore attacker Emily Brown (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and freshman attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) each contributed assists.

Sophomore defender Lyric Feingold-Conaway (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) had six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to lead the Shepherd defense.

Kristin Gobbi had two goals and an assist, while Rachel Cole added a pair of goals for the Cavaliers.

Shepherd scored three of the last four goals in the first half to tie the game at 6-6 going into the break.

With the game tied midway through the second half, the Rams got back-to-back goals from Funke and Kelly to take an 11-9 lead with 7:12 remaining in regulation. Wise got unassisted goals by Marshall (5:49) and Gobbi (1:56) to force overtime.

UVa-Wise held a 31-28 advantage in shots. Wise had a 14-13 edge in draw controls, while Shepherd held a 32-26 advantage in ground balls. Shepherd was 19-of-29 in clears, while UVa-Wise was 20-of-26.

Senior goalkeeper Casey Hickman (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded 13 saves for the Rams, while Melanie Reilly posted 13 saves for the Cavaliers.

Notes: Funke's five points on the day allowed her to reach 100 points for her career … Hickman recorded 166 saves on the year to tie her Shepherd single-season mark set in 2017 … Hickman's 61 ground balls on the year established a Shepherd single-season mark, surpassing the old mark on 54 shared by Savannah Shores (2015) and Alyx Albano (2014).
