BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Fred Brondsted scored 18 points to lead West Virginia Wesleyan (7-10, 4-7 MEC) to a 75-66 win over Shepherd University (10-7, 6-5 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Rams. He connected on 8-of-19 field goals with a 6-of-16 effort from three-point range. He added a game-high four steals.
Senior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 13 points and six boards, while sophomore forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
West Virginia Wesleyan had four players in double figures as Dusan Vicentic had 14 points, while Clay Todd and Daylin Lee each tossed in 13. Vicentic added a team-high nine rebounds.
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 37-34 lead at halftime as Brondsted scored 10 first-half points
The game featured four ties and 13 lead changes. The Bobcats took the lead for good at 53-51 after Lee hit three free throws with 11:08 remaining. Shepherd used a 9-0 run to rally from a 16-point deficit to get to within seven points at 73-66 with 1:30 left, but were unable to get any closer.
Shepherd connected on 43.8 percent (28-64) from the floor with a 25.8 percent (8-31) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 50 percent (2-4) of their free throws.
West Virginia Wesleyan shot 54 percent (27-50) from the floor with a 37.5 percent effort (12-32) from three-point range. The Bobcats shot 100 percent (9-9) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 35-24 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State at 4 p.m. for United Bank Day.
