Shepherd Women Top West Virginia Wesleyan for Fourth Straight Win; Lankford Posts Triple-Double

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area)  recorded a triple-double with 22 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds to lead Shepherd (9-8, 6-5 MEC) to a 92-66 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (4-10, 4-7 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. 

Lankford connected on 9-of-14 field goals with a 0-1 effort from three-point range. She drained 4-of-7 free throws. Lankford recorded her second triple-double of the season (16 points, 12 rebounds, 15 assists vs. Millersville on Jan. 2) and her sixth double-double of the year.

Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) added 21 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 14 points, while senior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) contributed six points, six rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.

Nicole Gilyard scored 13 points, Tyra Hughes had 11, and Alexa Szelong tossed in 10 to lead the Bobcats. Hughes grabbed a team-high five boards.

Shepherd opened the game on a 13-4 run and had a 53-32 lead at halftime.

Shepherd shot 51.8 percent (29-56) from the floor with a 42.1 percent effort (8-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 70.3 percent (26-37) of their free throws.

West Virginia Wesleyan hit on 32.4 percent (23-71) from the floor with a 16.7 percent (3-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Bobcats connected on 81 percent (17-21) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 45-47 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State at 2 p.m. for United Bank Day.
