Shepherd Baseball Downed at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken (6-1) recorded an 11-3 win over Shepherd University (0-6) in baseball action at USC Aiken on Sunday.

After scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings, The Pacers added four runs on four hits and one error in the fourth to take an 8-0 advantage.

USC Aiken extended it lead to 11-0 with three runs in the fifth. Alex Mills had an RBI-single, Luke Leisenring drove in a run when he was hit-by-pitch wit the bases loaded, and Blake Jenkins drove in a run on a fielder's choice to key the rally.

Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the eighth. Senior first baseman/outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) belted a solo homer and sophomore first baseman Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior second baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC).

The Rams added another run in the ninth as sophomore outfielder Kendall Jordan (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) reached on an infield single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith.

Senior designated hitter Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) and sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Joey Smithers went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored for the Pacers. Leisenring added a 2-for-3 effort and drove in four runs.

Garvin Alston Jr. (5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Pacers. Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC (3.1 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Tiffin for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
