SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Cynita Webb scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead UVa-Wise (12-12, 10-8 MEC) to a 75-66 win over Shepherd (11-13, 8-10 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Webb connected on 7-of-18 field goals with a 10-of-11 effort at the foul line.
Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) and sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) each scored 14 points to lead the Rams. Lankford also dished out eight assists.
Senior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Hanna Oliver added 14 points and Kalee Johnson added 13 for the Highland Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise had a 32-24 lead at halftime behind 10 points and eight rebounds from Webb.
Shepherd rallied late to get to within six points at 68-62 after a jumper by freshman guard Angela DeLorenzo (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont Senior) with 1:09 remaining, but UVa-Wise closed the game on a 7-4 run to seal the win.
Shepherd shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the floor with a 23.1 percent effort (3-13) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 64.3 percent (9-14) of their free throws.
UVa-Wise hit on 36.1 percent (25-58) from the floor with a 41.2 percent (7-17) performance from beyond the arc. The Highland Cavaliers connected on 82.9 percent (24-29) of their free throws.
UVa-Wise had a 47-30 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
