CLERMONT, Fla. – Shepherd University dropped a 5-0 decision to Winona State in the early game at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Sunday. The Rams rebounded with a 5-2 win the later contest against Southern Connecticut State.
Winona State took a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning behind a two-run singles from Katie Kolb and Lani Van Zyl.
The Warriors added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Alison Novak.
Van Zyl had a pair of hits to lead the Warriors.
Senior designated pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (4.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams. Jordyn Kleman (4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB) (4-0) got the win for Winona State. Alyssa Van Valley (2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K, 1 BB) gained the save.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second against Southern Connecticut State behind a two-run single off the bat of senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
The Owls rallied for a run in the bottom of the second behind an RBI-single by Jacqueline Dumont.
Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the fifth as junior designated player Kayla Wilt (Hydman, Pa. Hydman/Potomac State) tripled home junior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and later scored on a single by freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).
The Rams added a run in the sixth when freshman pinch hitter Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple by sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).
Southern Connecticut State added a run in the seventh on an RBI-triple by Sara Buscetto.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win for the Rams. Madison Feshier (3.0 IP, 3H, 1 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Owls.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they face Northwood at 2:30 p.m. and Dominican at 4:45 p.m.
