Shepherd Softball Wins Pair

CLERMONT, Fla. – Shepherd University (5-3) recorded a 4-2 win over Lewis (5-11) in eight innings in the early game in softball action at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Tuesday. The Rams added a 2-1 triumph in the later game against Indiana (Pa.).  IUP game details are currently unavailable.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior outfielder/designated pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

Lewis tied the game in the fifth as Lauren Brennan doubled and later scored on a single by Morgan Weber.

Shepherd plated three runs in the eighth on an RBI-single by sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and  a two-run single by  senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).

Lewis rallied with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Cierra Taylor.

Taylor and Sturgill each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Taylor led the Flyers with a 2-for-4 effort.

Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (8.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (1-1) earned the win for the Rams. Cassie Shaw (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (0-3) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they face Bemidji State at 11:15 a.m. and Purdue Northwest at 1:30 p.m.
