SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (12-7, 4-0 MEC) swept Glenville State (2-13, 1-3 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 10-4 win in game one and added a 15-2 triumph in the nightcap to run their winning streak to 11 games.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind and RBI double by junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC), an RBI-single from graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State), and an RBI-ground,out by sophomore first baseman Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic).
The Rams added four runs in the third as Smith had an RBI-triple and junior second baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) added an RBI-double to key the rally.
The Pioneers cut the lead to 7-3 on a three-run homer by Logan Henderson in the fourth.
Mahdi belted a two-run blast to key a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to give the Rams a 10-3 advantage.
Glenville State added a run in the seventh on a solo homer by Trevon Smith.
Smith went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the Rams.
Carter Boswell went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers.
Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 4 BB) (2-1) gained the win for the Rams. Glenville State starter Chase Swain (3.0 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Shepherd used an 18-hit attack en route to the convincing nightcap win.
Holding an 8-1 lead, Shepherd plated seven runs in the fifth to pull away. A three-run homer by Carr and a two-run triple by Stewart highlighted the scoring outburst.
Carr went 4-for-5 with four RBI to pace the Rams. Keer and Smith each added a pair of hits.
Junior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (3-1) earned the win in the nightcap for the Rams. Pioneer starter Jose Rodriguez (1.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Millerville for a 3 p.m. contest.
