FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Rachel Ladosky scored 21 points and Brooke Kurucz added 19 to lead Fairmont State (13-15, 10-12 MEC) to a 73-66 win over Shepherd (11-17, 8-14 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at Fairmont State on Saturday.
Senior guard
Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) led the Rams with 20 points. She connected on 7-of-18 field goals with a 2-of-8 effort from three-point range. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line. Her two three-pointers give her 162 for her career as she surpassed Cassie Murray (161, 2000-04) as the program's all-time leader.
Sophomore guard
Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 13 points, while freshman guard
Angela DeLorenzo (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont Senior) tossed in nine points off the bench.'
Senior forward
Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) added six points and nine rebounds, while senior guard
Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) seven points, a game-high 11 assists, and six boards.
Fairmont State had a 35-22 lead at halftime.
The Rams rallied in the fourth quarter to within five points at 71-66 after a layup by freshman guard
Hannah Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York)with 29 seconds remaining. Fairmont State got a pair of free throws in the final second to cap the win.
Shepherd shot 41.7 percent (25-60) from the floor with a 26.7 percent effort (4-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 70.6 percent (12-17) of their free throws.
Fairmont State hit on 45.9 percent (28-61) from the floor with a 35.7 percent (5-14) performance from beyond the arc. The Fighting Falcons connected on 63.2 percent (12-19) of their free throws.
Fairmont State had a 36-35 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed nine.
The eighth-seeded Rams return to action on Wednesday when they face ninth-seeded West Virginia State at 2:15 p.m. in first round action of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.
