URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University (13-5, 5-1 MEC) swept Urbana (2-20, 0-6 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Urbana on Saturday. The Rams rallied for a 10-3 win in game one and added a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Trailing 3-2 in game one, Shepherd plated eight runs in the fifth inning to capture the win. Freshman designated player
Lindsey Anderson (Winchester, Va./James Wood) had a two-run double, senior first baseman
Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) had an RBI-double, while junior pitcher
Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham), junior designated player
Kayla Wilt (Hydman, Pa. Hydman/Potomac State), and freshman third baseman
Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) each added RBI-singles to key the rally.
Senior pitcher/outfielder
Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Stocks (5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 10 K, 1 BB) (5-1) earned the win in relief for the Rams. Madison Bryant (4.1 IP, 7 H, 10 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 4 BB) (1-5) took the loss for the Blue Knights.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap behind and RBI-double off the bat of sophomore shortstop
Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills).
The Rams extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI-double by Burger and a two-run blast from Anderson.
The Blue Knights got a run in the sixth on an RBI-ground out by Kayleigh Pate and added two more in the seventh on a two-run single by Britney Bonno.
Burger went 3-for-3 and Purtell had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Erin Gardner and Bonno each had three hits for the Blue Knights.
Sophomore pitcher
Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) (2-0) earned the win for the Rams. Freshman pitcher
Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) worked the final three innings. Pate (7.0 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (1-13) took the loss for the Blue Knights.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Notre Dame for a noon doubleheader.
