SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (6-7) swept Davis & Elkins (0-13) in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 7-3 win in game one and added a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Rams only had three hits in game one. All three were home runs.
Junior third baseman Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) belted a grand slam in the second inning, while junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC and sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) each had a solo blast in the fifth.
Carr went 1-for-3 and scored a pair of runs to lead the Rams.
Ryan Savitt went 1-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs for the Senators.
Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Ryan Marketell (Webster, N.Y./Webster/Monroe CC) (3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB) notched his first save of the season. Davis and Elkins starter Brent McMillion (5.0 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 7 K, 5 BB) (0-3) took the loss.
Chase Degrood hit a two-run single in the third in the nightcap to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.
Shepherd answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) hit a two-run single to key the rally.
The Rams added three more runs in the fourth behind a two-run triple by sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) and an RBI-single from junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).
Shepherd completed the scoring with four runs in the fifth. Carr had an RBI-single and junior pinch-hitter Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) added an RBI-groundout to highlight the rally.
The nightcap was called after six innings due to darkness.
Junior second baseman Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Carr added a 2-for-3 performance with three runs scored and three RBIs to pace the Rams.
Troy McMillion and Degrood each had a pair of hits to lead the Senators.
Junior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (2-1) earned the win in the nightcap for the Rams. Senator starter Marcos Feria (3.1 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (0-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Shippensburg for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
