Jeremy Bailey tipped away a Shippensburg two-point attempt with just over a minute to play and Mark Springirth recovered the Red Raider onside kick attempt as Shepherd held off Shippensburg for a 34-32 win. at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard touchdown scamper by Bryan Wright with 8:54 left in the first quarter.
The Red Raiders cut the lead to 7-3 with 1:19 left in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Jamie Reder.
Shepherd took a 14-3 lead into the break when Dervon Wallace scored on a five-yard run at the 11 minute mark of the second quarter.
Reder added 42-yard field goal with 8:10 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 14-6.
Wallace (105 yards on 20 carries) added another score on a 34-yard jaunt with 4:35 left in the third quarter to give the Rams a 21-6 lead.
Shippensburg answered back on the ensuing kickoff on a 99-yard touchdown return by Brent Grimes to cut the deficit to 20-13.
Wright (game-high 111 yards on 16 carries) scored on a 52-yard run to give the Rams a 28-13 advantage with 1:18 left in the third quarter.
Rick Henshaw teamed with Andrew Heisler on a 13-yard scoring pass to start the fourth quarter and narrow the Ram lead to 28-20.
The Rams answered back on a 77-yard scoring pass from Dan Chlebowski to Mark Springirth with 12:19 left in the fourth quarter.
Shippensburg scored twice in the game's final minutes on a one-yard run by Henshaw at the 2:50 mark and a 36-yard pass from Tony Gomez to Walter Crump with 1:01 remaining.
Chlebowski completed 18-of-28 passes for 198 yards and a score. Springirth had six receptions for 112 yards to lead the Ram receivers. His stellar play earned him WVIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. Junior linebacker Todd Edmondson recorded 10 tackles to lead the Ram defense.
