SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (34-12) split with Kutztown (32-17) in softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. Shepherd gained a 2-0 win in game one, while Kutztown rallied for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one as freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) led off with a single and later scored on an infield error.
The Rams added a run in the sixth as senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on an infield single and later scored on a single by Purtell.
Konopka went 3-for-4, while senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) and Purtell each added a pair of hits for the Rams.
Katelyn Ostaszewski had two hits for the Golden Bears.
Senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB) (14-5) earned the complete game win. Amber Brugger (6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (11-8) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the sixth in the nightcap as senior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) led off with a triple and later scored when Konopka reached on an error.
Kutztown countered with a two-run triple by Sara Keeny in the seventh to gain the split.
Konopka had a 2-for-3 effort to lead the Rams.
Keeny went 3-for-4 to pace the Golden Bears.
Bridget Bailey (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 UER, 7 K, 0 BB) (15-5) gained the win. Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 12 K, 1 BB) (15-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
