Shepherd Softball Splits with Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University (22-6, 12-2 MEC) split with Fairmont State (16-12, 10-4 MEC)in MEC softball doubleheader action at Fairmont State on Wednesday. The Rams gained a 2-0 win in game one while Fairmont State rallied for a 3-2 victory in 11 innings in the nightcap. Shepherd's win streak ends at 16 games.

Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning in game one on a two-run double off the bat of senior outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).

Freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 12 K, 2 BB) (10-1) earned the win for the Rams. Hannah Absalom (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (11-3) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap as senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a double by Purtell.

The Rams added a run in the sixth as senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) led off with a double and scored on a double off the bat of junior pinch-hitter Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings as Becca Sullivan drove in a run on a ground out and Darby Peterson added an RBI-single.

Fairmont State scored a run in the 11th to gain the split. Andie Baughman was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Olivia Dunn. Jessie Weaver singled home Baughman with the game-winner.

Sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and Konopka each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Weaver had two hits to lead the Falcons.

Sturgill (10.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (7-2) took the loss. Darby Peterson (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K, 3 BB) (4-2) gained the win in relief for the Falcons.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
