SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Alex Herbert rushed 28 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 20-14 win over Glenville State College at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter when Leonard Ferguson teamed with Rodney Jackson on a 15-yard scoring play.
Herbert scored on a one-yard run with 4:48 remaining in the second quarter to give the Rams a 12-0 advantage.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard with 48 seconds left in the half when Joey Conrad fired a four-yard scoring strike to Emery Williams to cut the Ram lead to 12-7 at the half.
Herbert scored on a two-yard plunge with 6:15 left in the third quarter. Ferguson then connected with Jesse Correll on the two-point play to extend the Ram lead to 20-7.
Conrad teamed with Tavon McGee on a 28-yard scoring strike at the 12:44 mark of the fourth quarter. Chris Owens added the extra point to cut the lead to 20-14.
Glenville got the ball back with just over four and a half minutes left and appeared poised to win the game. The Pioneers converted two fourth downs and gained a first-and-goal at the Shepherd five-yard line in the game's final minute. After downing the ball to stop the clock, Conrad was unable to connect three straight passes, and Shepherd held on for the win.
Ferguson completed 11-of-24 passes for 174 yards, while Conrad connected on 45-of-71 passes for 442 yards.
Antonio Carter had 17 receptions for 182 yards and McGee had 12 catches for 155 yards to pace the Pioneers. Chad Pence led the Rams with six catches for 77 yards, while Correll added four receptions for 59 yards.
Bobby Jarvis led the Rams with 14 tackles. Jacquez Taylor had 11 stops to lead Glenville.
