SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (28-6) swept Shippensburg (19-15) in non-conference softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. The Rams gained a 2-0 win in game one and added a 4-0 triumph in the nightcap. Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) recorded a stolen base in the third inning in game one to record her 64th career stolen base to pass Ellizabeth Grizzell (63, 1992-95) as the program's all-time leader.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one. senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI-single from sophomore shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills).
The Rams added another run in the fifth as junior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) reached on a walk and later scored on a passed ball.
Burger went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Lacey Hunter singled in the sixth for Shippensburg's lone hit.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB) (10-3) earned the complete game shutout win. Taryn Wilson (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (10-8) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on a two-run double off the bat of Sturgill.
The Rams added a run in the third behind an RBI-single by Konopka.
Shepherd's final run came in the sixth on an RBI-single by Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando).
Sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) and Seymour each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Morgan Fetter went 2-for-3 for the Raiders.
Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 K, 0 BB) (13-1) earned the win for the Rams, while sophomore pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K, 2 BB) her second save of the season. Tressa Kagarise (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Fairmont State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
