BECKLEY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (36-14) posted a 5-3 win over Concord (33-17) in second day action of the MEC Baseball Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Friday.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning behind an RBI-single from senior first baseman Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC).
Concord tied the game in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Jordan Clark.
The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Evan Webb led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Neff.
Shepherd plated three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Junior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) had a two-run single and junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added an RBI-single to key the scoring.
The Rams added an insurance run in the eighth as Doyle doubled and scored on a double off the bat of junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).
Junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) went 4-for-5 and Doyle added a 3-for 5 effort to pace the Rams.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (5.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (8-2) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Junior Eric O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman/Monroe CC) (4.0 IP 1 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) gained the save. Logan Morrison (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (6-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to tournament action on Saturday when they face either Notre Dame or Charleston at 10 a.m.
