Wheeling Jesuit Eliminates Shepherd Women’s Lacrosse

WISE, Va. – Mackenzie Kaderabek scored 10 goals to lead Wheeling Jesuit (12-6) to a 21-13 win over Shepherd (11-7) in semifinal women's lacrosse action of the MEC Tournament at UVa-Wise on Friday. The game endured a 34-minute lightning delay.

Kaderabek's 10 goals are a tournament record and tie the mark for most points.

Junior attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) had five goals and an assist to lead the Rams. She added a game-high 11 draw controls and a team-high three ground balls.

Freshman midfielder Kira Barth (Sykesville, Md./Century) netted three goals, while sophomore attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) added two goals and a game-high four assists. Sophomore attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) had a pair of goals and three assists. Freshman defender/midfielder Paige Alexander (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) scored a goal, while junior midfielder Mallory Davila (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's  Ryken) contributed an assist.

Junior defender Lyric Feingold-Conaway (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led the defense with three caused turnovers, two ground balls, and a draw control. Her three caused turnovers tied Karli Friend of Wheeling Jesuit for game high honors.=

Kate Calder tallied five goals and Ally Coggins added a pair for the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit had a 9-6 lead at halftime behind five first-half goals from Kaderabek.

Wheeling Jesuit had a 36-27 edge in shots and a 23-18 advantage in ground balls.  Shepherd had a 21-15 edge in draw controls. Shepherd was 9-of-14 in clears, while Wheeling Jesuit was 16-of-19.

Freshman goalkeeper Hailey Bennett (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded 10 saves for the Rams. Emma Stair posted seven saves for the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit advances to Sunday's championship game at noon.

Notes: Funke's 73 goals (62, Nicole Ruane, 2012) and 98 points (86, Georgia Karr, 2014) on the year established new Shepherd single-season marks … Funke's 115 draw controls (75, Sarah Wendt, 2018) also set a Shepherd single-season record … Bennett's 10 saves on the day give her 174 for the year to break the old mark of 166 set by Casey Hickman in 2017 and 2018 … Shepherd's 11 wins this year are the most since the Rams posted a 12-5 mark in 2015 … Shepherd set a new team mark for most ground balls in a season (424).
