PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd University (1-1) had nine hits on the day en route to a 4-2 win over UNC Pembroke in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead on a lead-off solo blast off the bat of senior outfielder Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC).
The Braves tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Trevor Clemons reached on a walk and later scored on a ground-out by Bobby Dixon.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the second as sophomore catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) led off with a single and later scored on a single by senior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
The Rams added a run in the fourth as junior second baseman Easy Goita (Bronx, N.Y/James Monroe/CCBC) doubled and scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland).
Shepherd took a 4-1 advantage in the fourth as Holmes reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a double off the bat of junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School).
The Braves scored the game's final run on a solo homer by Gage Hammonds in the ninth.
Carr and Goita each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Rams. Senior reliever Eric O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman/Monroe CC) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) gained the save. UNCP starter Jalen Scott (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 9 k, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Sunday when they complete a three-game with a 1 p.m. game.
