Shepherd Baseball Rallies Past Alderson Broaddus

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) doubled home sophomore catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Shepherd University (4-6) to an 8-7 win over Alderson Broaddus (1-5) in game one baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The nightcap was halted due to darkness with Shepherd holding a 12-2 advantage after five innings.

Trailing 2-0, Shepherd got on the scoreboard in the second inning when redshirt-junior second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) reached on a walked an later scored when sophomore designated hitter Connor DeWees (Red Lion, Pa./Red  Lion)  reached on an infield error.

Alderson Broaddus added a run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Vincenzo Rauso.

The Rams got a three-run double by Doss and a two-run single by junior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

The Battlers rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth behind and RBI-single by Taylor Cook and a sacrifice fly by Chasen Claus.

Alderson Broaddus took a 7-6 lead in the seventh with a pair of runs. Carson Comer and Cameron Shee reached on back-to-back walks. Comer scored on a single by Misael Sanchez and Shee scored on when Rauso reached base on an error.   

Junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) led off the seventh with a single and stole second. Senior outfielder Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) walked and was forced out when Doss reached on a fielder's choice. Schwartz reached on a fielder's choice and Carr scored as the throw to the plate was late. Goldsmith followed with the game-winning double to plate Doss.

Carr went 2-for 3 to pace the Rams.

Sanchez went 3-for-5 for the Battlers.

Senior reliever Tyler Shorter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (1-2) earned the win. Bradan Mullenix (1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (0-2) took the loss.

The two teams return to action on Sunday noon at Fairfax Field. Today's nightcap will be resumed and it will be followed by the regularly scheduled nine-inning game.
