Shepherd Softball Goes 1-1 to Open Season

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd split softball action to open the season at the Glenville State Softball Tournament on Saturday. The Rams dropped a 7-4 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) in an early game and added a 5-4 win over Glenville State (0-3) in a later contest.

Trailing 2-0 against Glenville State, Shepherd tied the game in the second on a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).

The Rams took a 4-2 lead in the third on a two-run blast by junior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills).

The Pioneers got a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Makayla McGuire.

Shepherd took a 5-3 lead in the fourth. Freshman designated player Kylie Condon (Charleston, W.Va./Washington) reached on a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).

Glenville State added a run in the seventh on a solo blast by Paranda Uber.

Burger went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 8 BB) (1-0) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) earned the save. Celina Maberto (3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-2) took the loss.

The Rams dropped a 7-4 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan earlier game.

Purtell went 2-for-4 with a solo homer to lead the Rams against the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. and University of Charleston at 3 p.m. in final day tournament action.
